Realistically it looks like it goes straight down and I'd agree that was the intent, but it IS a maintenance shaft for access between decks. We don't really experience the full path down the engineering shaft going from Med-Sci to Engineering since it's a level load. This value does not influence any parameters of the armament - it is merely a rough guide to how much more wear and tear it can endure before breaking (and requiring a Repair or the use of an Auto-Repair Unit).
When equipped, the ammo box will display a colored dot and a number corresponding to the condition of the weapon. The current condition of a ranged weapon can be determined by moving the cursor over it in the world view or inventory.
